Acne: Why Your Skin is Breaking Out

acne: why your skin is breaking out

Unfortunately  there is no perfect way to cure acne (pimples). This is because the cause of acne breakouts differs among individuals. For some, it comes down to genetics. Another factor is due to a poor skincare routine.

Acne can appear anywhere, but it is most commonly found  on the face. Wherever it may be, it can be managed. In this blog post, we show you possible reasons your skin is breaking out. We also suggest solutions for better skin health.

1.  You sleep in your makeup

Sometimes, you may be tired, and all you want to do is sleep! This is common after a long day. They sleep  without washing their makeup fully off

This may be the reason you’re having acne breakouts. Whether your makeup is non-comedogenic or not, it is important to wash it off before going to bed.

Takeaway: Always remove your makeup before going to bed. If you are too tired to wash it off, use a non-comedogenic makeup remover towelette.

2.  You let your skin dry out

When the body is not properly hydrated, your skin could dry out. Dry skin is more likely to break, crack or chafe. Also, acne usually occurs when the skin is oily. When this happens, you are tempted to use acne treatments till the surface is dry. This is not advisable. It will irritate your skin and cause more breakouts.

Takeaway: Stay hydrated. Your water intake should be at least 8-ounces of water. Drink more than these if you are working out, lactating or pregnant. Apply moisturisers like HR hemp seed body butter to prevent your skin from drying out.

3.  You scrub your skin to clean it

One of the steps for wearing certain kinds makeup is scrubbing the face clean. However, scrubbing your face will only irritate the skin, and the result is acne breakouts.

Takeaway: Gentle washing does it! Use your cleanser gently in a circular motion. That ensures enough cleanser gets to all parts of the skin.

4.  You pop acne spots

Are you an acne popper? It is tempting to squeeze the acne spot because it is always elevated above other surrounding areas. But doing that will only force pus, dead cells, bacteria deeper into the skin. The result is more inflamed skin and acne flares. It will also lead to scars and cause pain.

Takeaway: Do not be tempted to pop your acne. Consult the doctor if it persists after trying remedies or medications.

5.  You share makeup tools with friends

Sharing makeup brushes can lead to acne! Though acne is not contagious, dead cells, acne-causing bacteria, and oil may still be in the applicators you share with your friend who has eczema even after cleaning. When you use these makeup brushes/applicators, your facial skin will become clogged, and the result is acne breakouts.

Takeaway: Do not share your makeup tools with anybody. If you do before, rinse them with clean water and spirit/alcohol later.

6.  You wash your face too much

As good as washing your face is, it may irritate the skin if it is done excessively. Most acne sufferers are tempted to wash their face throughout the day since acne is usually a result of oily skin. However, this may not produce the desired result.

Takeaway: Wash your face with clean water twice daily. Specifically, after you wake up from sleep and shortly before going to bed.

7.  You wipe away sweat during workouts

There is no way your skin won’t be sweaty when you work out. Sweat on acne-prone skin is not a problem itself. However, it may lead to more acne breakouts when you are trying to clean your skin using a towel. When you rub your skin roughly with a towel, there is more friction, and your skin will be irritated. This can also cause more breakouts.

Takeaway: Gently pat your skin with a clean towel during workouts.

8.  You use comedogenic makeup or skincare products

Makeup and skincare products are good, but it may cause more skin problems if they are not the right kind. Some of these products contain oils and other components that  make you susceptible to acne. Also, some people use makeup to cover their acne. This causes more clogged pores and ultimately, acne flares.

Takeaway: Always check the ingredients used in making the skincare products before use. Discard those that contain isopropyl (and its derivatives) and propylene and D&C red dyes

 9.  You expose your skin to excessive sunlight

If you like to go tanning, this is probably the time to reconsider. Acne-prone skin is not fit for being under direct sunlight . Though staying in an open space to catch some rays may dry your acne, it also causes dehydration. After some time, your skin will be more oily, and the pores will be blocked. This can result in acne breakouts.

Takeaway: Always wear sunscreen to limit the amount of sun rays your skin receives. Do not use oily sunscreens. Non-comedogenic or oil-free sunscreen is good for both sun and acne protection.

10.  You consume predisposing foods

Certain kinds of foods are known to cause reactions that lead to acne flares. Though there is no scientific evidence to show that such foods directly cause acne, susceptible persons see new pimple pop after consuming such foods. A scientific literature review published in 2010 shows that high glycemic foods and sweets may trigger acne. Generally, these foods increase blood sugar level.

Takeaway:  Avoid foods like chips, bread, and soft drinks. Dairy products should also be avoided if your acne increases after taking them.

What is the Takeaway/Summary?

Managing your acne is simple if you know what causes your breakouts. Causes of acne breakouts may include diet, hormones, and genetics. Interestingly, the tips for preventing it are the same you need to manage it. Therefore, if you eat right, reduce stress, and do not take predisposing foods, you should will be fine.

Acne is hard to manage.. There may be permanent scars, anxiety and depression. Whichever method or remedy you choose for managing your acne, you have to be consistent. This is having ensured that it is right.
